The event was on Thursday, February 25, 2010, in Room 904 at 11:50 a.m. Scandaglia & Ryan IP Legal Writing Award Presented to DePaul First-Year StudentThe 2008 Scandaglia & Ryan Intellectual Property Legal Writing Award was presented to Emily Monteith, DePaul's First-Year Intellectual Property Legal Writing Program student earning the highest grade in her class. Ms. Monteith received the award at the DePaul University College of Law Center for Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology (CIPLIT) reception on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 25 E. Jackson Blvd., Lewis Center, Rare Book Room, 6th Fl. Library. Ms. Monteith is an accomplished DePaul student, receiving CALI Awards in Constitutional Process I, LARC I and LARC II. She also is a staff member of the DePaul Law Review and an associate editor of Women's Law Digest. In conjunction with her studies, Ms. Monteith is a legal researcher for the Cultural Heritage Center for the U.S. Department of State. Prior to law school, she was a faculty assistant at the Chicago-Kent College of Law during the 2006/2007 school year. As an undergraduate, she attended Wheaton College, where she received a B.A., magna cum laude, in International Relations and History in 2005. While at Wheaton College, she co-founded the Model United Nations. Attorney Sara Youn Joins Scandaglia & RyanScandaglia & Ryan welcomes Associate Sara Youn to the firm. Ms. Youn, who joined S&R on September 22, 2008, has experience representing clients in complex product liability cases, franchisor-franchisee disputes and class action defense litigation. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Youn was a staff attorney practicing in the Seattle office of Perkins Coie. She also served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Gary Larson, District Judge for the Fourth Judicial District of Minnesota. Ms. Youn received a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2007, where she received a Dean's Elite Scholarship. During law school, she was the managing editor of the Minnesota Law Review (2006-2007). In 2002, Ms. Youn received a B.A., magna cum laude, from Georgetown University, where she was a George F. Baker Scholar. She also authored an honors thesis, "Out of That Land: American Missionary Influence on Early Korean Immigration to Hawaii." Attorney Seth Remy Yohalem Joins Scandaglia & RyanSeth Remy Yohalem has joined Scandaglia & Ryan as an associate. Mr. Yohalem has experience representing clients in a variety of commercial litigation matters, including contract and insurance coverage disputes, class action defense as well as antitrust actions. Prior to joining the firm, he was an associate at Kirkland & Ellis LLP (Chicago office), where he worked for more than three years. In addition to practicing law, Mr. Yohalem is a Metro Board member, Metropolitan Family Services, a leading human services agency that has been helping families throughout Chicago and surrounding suburbs for 150 years. In 2004, he received a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar all three years. He also was a writing and research editor for the Columbia Journal of Law and Social Problems for which he authored the article "We'll Always Have Parish: The Ninth Circuit Court Decision and Its Implications for Enforcement of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines." In 2001, Mr. Yohalem earned a B.A., magna cum laude, from Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Charitable Outreach: Kohl Children's Museum's Chip in for Children 2008 Golf OutingFor a second consecutive year, S&R participated as a Hole Sponsor in the Kohl Children's Museum Chip in for Children Golf Outing on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at The Glen Club in Glenview, Illinois. Proceeds from the event benefit the Museum, which offers a variety of exhibits and programs designed to make learning fun and interesting. Newer exhibits include Let's Play Railway, a display of three giant railway cars that allows children to experience many wonderful railway adventures. Scandaglia & Ryan Attorney Therese Tully Named Partner of the FirmTherese Tully has been named a partner at Scandaglia & Ryan, effective January 1, 2008. Since joining the firm in 2003, Ms. Tully has represented clients involved in hospitality industry litigation, partnership disputes and trademark prosecutions. She also has garnered significant experience representing clients in cases concerning patent infringement, commercial contracts and constitutional law. Additionally, throughout her legal career, Ms. Tully has worked on noteworthy pro bono matters involving issues such as the death penalty, political asylum and divorce/orders of protection. Prior to joining S&R, Ms. Tully was an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission. She also was an associate at Jenner & Block, LLC for three years, and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Martin C. Ashman of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Ms. Tully is a co-author of the article "Express Preemption and Premarket Approval Under the Medical Device Amendments," Food and Drug Law Journal (vol. 59, no.1), November 2004, which was cited in several trial, appellate and Supreme Court briefs as well as by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in a published decision Riegel v. Medtronic, Inc. Before going to law school, Ms. Tully, was a professional equestrian instructor. Her love of horses, and all animals for that matter, grew during her childhood when she competitively rode and showed English horses in both the hunter/jumper divisions in Michigan. Ms. Tully received a J.D., magna cum laude, from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1996, where she was a student articles editor for the Loyola University Law Review. She also was an editor on the Loyola University Consumer Law Journal. In 1993, she earned a B.S., with honors in Finance, from Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan. Attorney James Ahler Leaves Private Practice at S&R to Become Indiana Superior Court JudgeIn November 2007, attorney James R. Ahler welcomed the opportunity to fulfill his dream of serving the public by accepting Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels' appointment to become the Jasper County Superior Court judge. Mr. Ahler left his private practice at Scandaglia & Ryan, where he represented clients in complex litigation matters involving claims of investment fraud and breach of contract as well as real estate disputes, to succeed Judge J. Philip McGraw, who retired on October 26, 2007. S&R Founding Partners Gregory J. Scandaglia and William J. Ryan are extremely proud of Mr. Ahler's appointment and are confident he is well-equipped to serve on the bench. Mr. Ahler grew up in Rensselaer, Indiana, and has strong ties to the community. At a very early age, he developed a great admiration and profound respect for the local judges, including Judge McGraw, hoping to one day emulate them. Mr. Ahler is no stranger to the inner workings of judicial chambers. Throughout his legal career, he served as a judicial law clerk to two appellate court judges, The Honorable Michael S. Kanne and The Honorable William J. Bauer, both U.S. Circuit Court judges for the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He also was a judicial extern to Magistrate Terry I. Adelman, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Missouri and a summer law clerk to Judge Thomas G. Fisher, Indiana Tax Court. According to Mr. Ahler, clerking for the various members of the judiciary were extremely valuable and intellectually challenging experiences. "These experiences have provided me with opportunities to work for some of the best legal minds in the Midwest," noted Mr. Ahler. "However, I was very pleased to find that practicing law at Scandaglia & Ryan was no less rewarding than my judicial clerkship experiences. Scandaglia & Ryan Honors Two DePaul Students with Its IP Legal Writing AwardIn an unusual turn of events, the DePaul University College of Law Center for Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology (CIPLIT) presented the Scandaglia & Ryan Intellectual Property Legal Writing Award to two leading students participating in DePaul's First-Year Intellectual Property Legal Writing Program. Ordinarily, the award is presented to one student who receives the highest grade in the first-year program. In 2007, however, two exemplary classmates tied for top grades. Mr. Piper and Mr. Schildt received the 2007 Scandaglia & Ryan Intellectual Property Legal Writing Award at the CIPLIT celebration on Tuesday, November 6, 2007. Both Mr. Piper and Mr. Schildt are members of the DePaul Law Review and expect to receive a J.D. in May 2009. Mr. Piper grew up in a small town in Osceola, Missouri. In 1998, he received a B.S. summa cum laude, from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He then went on to earn an M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University in 2001 and 2004, respectively. Mr. Schildt is from Quincy, Illinois. In 2007, he served as legal extern to the Honorable Amy J. St. Eve, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Prior to law school, he received a Bachelor in Music, with highest honors, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. Erie Neighborhood House Distinguishes Bradley Hergott as TEAM Mentor of the YearErie Neighborhood House, a community service agency that provides Latino and diverse low-income families with a wide range of educational programs, honored Scandaglia & Ryan associate Bradley D. Hergott with its TEAM Mentor of the Year award. Erie House launched its Tutoring to Educate for Aims and Motivation (TEAM) program in 1984, pairing up Chicago professionals as mentors with at-risk high school students. In weekly one-on-one sessions, the mentors assist the youths with academics, college preparation and life skills, serving as positive, dependable role models. Since 1998, TEAM has had a 100 percent high school graduation rate and a 97 percent college placement rate. Mr. Hergott has been a TEAM mentor since 2003. He was selected to receive the Mentor of the Year award from among 52 other participants in the program. His TEAM graduate, Adam Pomales, was also honored, receiving the Rafael Ravelo "Corazón de Oro" (Heart of Gold) award and a scholarship. Mr. Hergott has contributed to society in many other ways as well. Throughout his legal career, he has represented several clients on a pro bono basis, receiving a special award for his efforts. He also volunteered at Safe House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence and worked for the Child Advocacy Law Clinic through the University of Michigan Law School. Charitable Outreach: Crisis NurseryFor a second consecutive year, Scandaglia & Ryan and Matthew Boyd Steffens are donating Chicago Cubs tickets to be auctioned off at the 15th Annual Crisis Nursery Dinner & Auction on June 6, 2008. The proceeds from the auction will be used to support the Urbana-Champaign-based, child abuse prevention and family support agency, which provides free, around-the-clock emergency intervention, respite care and support to families in crisis. The Cubs tickets were donated on behalf of Wolfram Research, Inc.'s In-House Counsel Eric Schacht, a firm client and a member Crisis Nursery's Board of Directors. Kohl Children's Museum is a non-profit, hands-on learning laboratory for children up to eight years old. The exhibits and programs are designed to make learning fun and interesting. Exhibits teach children about a various subjects ranging from art and nature to math and science. They also mimic everyday life activities as experienced in the museum's simulated car care shop, grocery store and fast-food restaurant. The Scandaglia & Ryan Intellectual Property Legal Writing Award 2006-2007Scandaglia & Ryan is pleased to have sponsored the Fifth Annual Scandaglia & Ryan Intellectual Property Legal Writing Award reception at DePaul University in October 2006. The reception, presented by the DePaul University College of Law Center for Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology, honors students participating in the first-year Legal Research, Analysis & Communication curriculum and celebrates the recipient of the Scandaglia & Ryan IP Legal Writing Award. This award is given to the student with the highest grade in the First-Year Intellectual Property Legal Writing Program. The 2006-2007 recipient of the award was Nicholas J. Angelocci, one of 55 students selected to participate in the IP Legal Writing Program. Nick expects to receive a J.D. in May 2008. Prior to attending law school, Nick worked as an engineer/scientist for Boeing Satellite Systems in California. He received a B.S. in Engineering, magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan in 2001. Not an easy task -- students awarded seats in this year's class achieved LSAT scores averaging over 160 and several possess graduate degrees from some of the top universities in the country. As a class, this year's 1Ls include 2 Ph.D.s, 9 Master's in business and sciences, 18 with engineering degrees and several more with technical degrees in physics, biochemistry and pre-med. CIPLIT places special emphasis on current topics in Intellectual Property in the first year Legal Research, Analysis and Communication Program. Scott has developed a wealth of experience in both domestic and international trademark and international trademark and copyright matters. Scandaglia & Ryan Welcomes Scott E. RogersScott Rogers, former General Counsel of Ty Inc., has joined the law firm of Scandaglia & Ryan as Of Counsel, bringing with him a wealth of experience in copyright and trademark law. Scott Rogers began his legal career in 1990 with the Trenam Kemker law firm in Tampa, Florida, where he gained substantial experience handling a variety of complex commercial litigation matters. Returning to his home state in 1996, Mr. Rogers joined Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione in Chicago, focusing his practice exclusively on intellectual property. In 1998, at the height of the Beanie Baby plush toy craze, Mr. Rogers became Ty Inc.’s Vice President and General Counsel. He was responsible for establishing and protecting a multi-billion dollar trademark and copyright portfolio in the face of the many challenges presented by counterfeiters, infringers, copycats and others seeking to exploit Ty’s intellectual property. Mr. Rogers coordinated the worldwide efforts of attorneys, law enforcement, customs officials, and private investigators, directed all litigation matters, and secured one of the most famous intellectual property portfolios in the world. Mr. Rogers brings a wealth of experience in both domestic and international trademark and copyright matters to his current practice. He is proficient both in the prosecution of trademark and copyright applications, as well as in the enforcement of intellectual property rights. As General Counsel at Ty Inc., Mr. Rogers had sole responsibility for overseeing several multi-million dollar lawsuits. Internationally, Mr. Rogers has a broad base of foreign colleagues with whom he works, and has extensive experience working with U.S. Customs and governmental bodies throughout the world. He has testified for two Trading Standards and Practices offices in the United Kingdom and worked with the Director of Customs in the People’s Republic of China, whose office conducted several raids on counterfeiters at Mr. Rogers’ behest. He also has been a lecturer at the Annual Meeting of the International Trademark Association. In addition to his extensive knowledge of intellectual property law, Mr. Rogers’ background also covers the protection of trade secrets, non-competition agreements, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices. He has substantial experience with human resources issues and employment/labor law. He is a member of the Illinois, Missouri and Florida Bar Associations, and is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the United States Supreme Court. He graduated from the Florida State University College of Law with highest honors. A member of the Order of the Coif, he was also an editor and author on the Florida State University Law Review.
