MATTHEW BOYD STEFFENS

Matthew Boyd Steffens is an associate at Scandaglia & Ryan representing clients in complex matters, including class actions, contracts and leases, employment disputes, insurance, sports law (NCAA), tortious interference claims, the Uniform Commercial Code, and use restrictions. He also assists clients with intellectual property issues involving patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. Mr. Steffens has a wide range of experience in litigating a matter, including TROs and preliminary injunctions, motion practice from complaints through summary judgment, settlement and trial. Prior to joining S&R in 2004, Mr. Steffens was an associate at McDermott, Will & Emery. He also was a law clerk at the Cook County Office of the Public Guardian in 2001.

CASES IN POINT

 
  • On behalf of a software company, successfully settled a breach of contract dispute over attorneys' fees.

     
  • Representing a major music distribution company in a matter involving breach of guaranty and breach of contract for unpaid merchandise.

     
  • Obtained settlement consistent with client's business objectives in action against former employee and competitor for breach of fiduciary duty and trade secret misappropriation.

     
  • Secured two summary judgment rulings on $750,000 damages claim on behalf of a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company.

     
  • Obtained judgment of "no coverage" in favor of insurer in case involving claim in excess of $10 million.

     
  • Secured dismissal of action alleging copyright infringement, trade secret misappropriation and breach of contract on behalf of a Georgia-based chain of dog kennels.

     
  • Defended a major retailer in a lawsuit brought by a grocery chain seeking temporary and permanent injunctive relief arising out of an alleged breach of lease agreement. Defeated motion for TRO and obtained successful action for client shortly before the injunction hearing was set to begin.

     
  • On behalf of an Illinois-based, independent retail electric supplier, successfully resolved numerous matters involving issues such as trademark infringement, denial of employment discrimination claim, breach of contract and defamation.

     
  • Defended a hotel management company and hotel owner in $30 million litigation brought by defendants arising out of the purchase and sale of a $101 million luxury hotel in Mexico.

     
  • Represented a high school student, on a pro bono basis, in a Chicago Public Schools expulsion hearing resulting in the denial of an expulsion request.
