JOHN B. THORNTON

John Thornton joined Scandaglia & Ryan in July 2006 after serving three years as an associate in the litigation department of Jenner & Block LLP. He also was an associate at Vedder, Price, Kaufman & Kammholz PC.

Mr. Thornton has represented clients in a wide range of complex commercial litigation matters, involving contract disputes, insurance coverage, trade secrets, restrictive covenants, breaches of fiduciary duty, bankruptcy, patent infringement, SEC, FTC, and FCC investigations, and telecommunications law. In addition, he has counseled clients on enterprise-wide records management programs and electronic communications policies, and he has spoken on topics related to records retention and trade secrets.

Mr. Thornton taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at the University of Illinois at Chicago for more than 14 years, and he also taught ESL to refugees in the Truman College Refugee Program.

CASES IN POINT

 
  • Represented a Fortune 500 manufacturer in breach of contract action. Obtained dismissal of six counts and verdict that denied most of plaintiff's claim for damages.

     
  • Represented a real estate development company and a bank holding company in a cutting-edge technology case involving the placement of an automated teller machine. Negotiated a settlement that obtained the key relief sought by the clients.

     
  • Represented a national toymaker in racial discrimination claim brought by former employee, and negotiated a settlement for a nominal amount.

     
  • Represented a national toymaker in prosecution of claims of trademark infringement and persuaded numerous infringers to cease their activities.

     
  • Represented a national toymaker in purchase of internet domain name for client's new product and successfully negotiated purchase of same.

     
  • Represented a national education company in trade secret case and negotiated very favorable settlement for client.

     
  • Represented a major telecommunications provider in a breach of contract action and negotiated a mediated settlement on very favorable terms.

     
  • Represented a lender in a class action and obtained exclusion of all of plaintiff's damages evidence, which forced settlement for a nominal amount.

     
  • Represented a lender in a class action and obtained denial of class certification.

     
  • Represented a securities holder in bankruptcy action and obtained distribution of stock valued at approximately $35 million for client.
